G.A. Macdonnell, quoted by Winter, gives the date as 1861. Sergeant gives 1858. The Chess Player's Chronicle (Mar. 1859, p.100) also gives 1858. The Sunday Times of 20 Dec. 1857 (supplement, p.3) says the first game was played 'on Monday', i.e., 14 Dec. 1857. Bell's Life in London (4 Apr. 1858, p.3) gives the result as +7-6=2 for Campbell, as does the Sunday Times of 21 Mar. 1858 (supplement, p.3). |
