| Spinrad lists results for Kolisch-Barnes under the year 1859, and an obituary for Kolisch in the Chess Monthly of May 1889 (see Sarah's 'Death of Baron Kolisch' web page) implies this, saying that Kolisch went to England in 1859, and gives the result as 12-1 for Kolisch. Feenstra Kuiper, Golombek, and Di Felice give +10-1=0 in 1860, and Golombek says Kolisch only came to England in 1860. Hooper and Whyld also give +10-1 but without a date. Barcza gives +10-1=0 but in 1862. Sergeant gives +8-1=1 for Kolisch in 1861 in A Century of British Chess (p.107). The Chess Player's Chronicle of June 1861 (p.185) has +8-1=1 and says the games were played in May (1861). Staunton, in the Illustrated London News of 18 Aug. 1860 (p.164) says the match was in progress, giving a score so far of +2-0=1 for Kolisch. La (Nouvelle) Régence of Aug. 1860 (p.253) has the same result. Shakhmatniy Listok of Jan. 1861 (p.4) has +3-0=1 for Kolisch. The Manchester Weekly Express and Guardian of 18 May 1861 says that Barnes won 1 out of 13 games. The Era of 26 May 1861 and the New York Clipper of 22 Jun. 1861 give +12-1=1 for Kolisch. Perhaps the most consistent interpretation of these confusing reports is Zavatarelli's, who says that the first series started in July 1860, when they played 3 games with a score +2-0=1 for Kolisch, after which Kolisch was ill for a period, and then a fourth game was played in Aug. 1860, bringing the score to +3-0-1 for Kolisch. Then the second series was played in May 1861, with a score of +8-1=1 for Kolisch, totalling +11-1=2 over the entire 14 games. I will list the two results separately, one in each year. |
