Notes: |
Feenstra Kuiper, Di Felice, Golombek, Hooper and Whyld, the British Chess Magazine of Oct. 1905, and Spinrad all give the date as 1860 and the result +5-2 for de Riviere. The first three of these sources also give the location as London. Contemporary sources, however, show that it was played in Apr. 1859. Staunton gives the result (+5-2 for de Riviere) in the 30 Apr. 1859 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.430), where he says that the match 'has just terminated'. This result is also given in a report in the Sunday Times of 24 Apr. 1859, and in the Era of 24 Apr. 1859 (p.14). So I will attribute this result to 1859, with end date in April. |
