| Feenstra Kuiper and Di Felice give date as 1865; Hooper and Whyld give 1865-1866; the Era of 17 Dec. 1865 (p.4) and 24 Dec. 1865 (p.4) indicate that it started that month. The Illustrated London News of 27 Jan. 1866 says the match finished 'a few days since'; The Chess Player's Magazine of Feb. 1866 (p.59) and the Era of 21 Jan. 1866 (p.7) say it finished on 10 Jan. 1866, but give the score as +7-3=3 for de Vere, as does Le Sphinx of 15 Feb. 1866 (p.337), the Neue Berliner Schachzeitung of Apr. 1866 (p.110) and the Huddersfield College Magazine of Mar. 1875 (p.119), whereas most other sources have +7-3=2 for de Vere. The City of London Chess Magazine of Mar. 1875 (p.42) gives +7-3=4 for de Vere. Turf, Field and Farm (10 Feb. 1866) says it finished on 3 Jan. 1866. |
