Notes: |
Feenstra Kuiper and Di Felice give result as +6-6=0; Sergeant, Sunnucks, Golombek, Zavatarelli, and Hooper and Whyld give +6-6=1; La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives 7-7. The Apr. 1873 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle gives partial result +3-2=2 for Bird (unnumbered page); the Illustrated London News of 5 Apr. 1873 gives partial result +5-4=2 for Bird; the 26 Apr. 1873 issue of the Illustrated London News says the match was drawn; the June 1873 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle (unnumbered page) says the match was given up when each player had scored 6 games. The information from the Illustrated London News and the Chess Player's Chronicle suggests that the result was +6-6=2, consistent with the score given by La Grande Storia degli Scacchi and by Tim Harding. The 8 Mar. 1873 issue of Land and Water gives the start date as 5 Mar. 1873 (information from Tim Harding). The date of the final game is given in the Westminster Papers of 1 May 1873 (p.9). |
