The terms were that, in order to win the match, Deschapelles had to win 2/3 of the games. All we actually know is that Deschapelles failed to win the match, i.e. 2/3 of the games. Only one game is now known, a win by Cochrane. The score is not known, nor how many games were played. However, since this result greatly modifies our assessment of Cochrane's strength in comparison to his poor score against Deschapelles at pawn and 2 moves, I have decided to use a 'soft' result here of +3-3. We know that Deschapelles won at least 2 as he said he won those games (plural) that were desperate. And we know that he won in a proportion less than 2 out of 3. We also know that Cochrane's wins exceeded a third of the games by less than six games, since we are told that he won back only part of the money he lost in the three-way contest with Deschapelles and de la Bourdonnais. Using a result of 3/6 for Deschapelles is a compromise between 2/6 (winning only 2 games) and 4/6 (winning 2 out of 3) without claiming too much precision in this estimate. I could have used 2/4 to achieve the same percentage, but 6 games gives a bit more of a counterbalance to the result of the games at Pawn and two moves they played in the three-way contest the same year. |
