Some sources give a score of +7-7=1 between these players in 1842, but that result seems to belong to 1845. However, Di Felice gives a score of +4-3 in 1842 as well as the 1845 match and the Chess Player's Chronicle (v.4, p.30) says 19 games were played. This latter comes from Le Palamède (15 Nov. 1842, p.233), which says that 19 games had already been played in a series intended to go to 50 games (15 Oct. 1842, p.183), with a score so far of +9-9=1. This looks a lot like the supposed 1845 result, so whether there were actually 2 matches, one in 1842 and one in 1845 remains in doubt. However, I have taken the result from Le Palamède here as well as the 1845 result on the strength of Hooper and Whyld. How formal a match this was is unclear. |
