| Notes: |
| This does not seem to have been considered a formal match, though there was a stake on each game according to Mason (writing in 1885; see van Winsen, p.34). Marínez said (again in 1885; see van Winsen, p.35) that he had always considered this a match. The Maryland Chess Review of Apr. 1875 called it a social encounter (see van Winsen, p.37). The Dubuque Chess Journal of Apr. 1875 gives this result +3-1=1 for Martinez twice, once in Philadelphia and once in New York, but van Winsen suggests that this was an error, and that the New York result was +3-0=0 for Mason. |
