Sunnucks gives result as +11-5=4 for Mason; Sergeant, Feenstra Kuiper, Hooper and Whyld, Di Felice and van Winsen give +11-4=4 for Mason; Elo and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give 13-6 for Mason, which is consistent with the latter result. The Illustrated London News of 22 Jan. 1876 also gives +11-4=4, as does the Dubuque Chess Journal of Apr. 1876 (pp.143-175), which gives all 19 games. Sunnucks gives date as 1875; Feenstra Kuiper, Elo, Hooper and Whyld, Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give 1876; van Winsen gives exact dates 28 Dec. 1875 to 5 Jan. 1876. The 1 Feb. 1876 issue of the Westminster Papers says that Bird arrived in New York on 8 Dec. 1875 and the 22 Jan. 1876 issue of the Illustrated London News gives the end date as 5 Jan. 1876. The 29 Apr. 1876 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.431) claims that Bird and Mason played a number of (presumably offhand) games subsequent to this match, in which Bird won most, to the point where he was 7 games ahead, including the match. However, no exact score is given. |
