| The Illustrated London News of 29 Apr. 1876 gives +5-0 for Bird, as does Bird himself in the New York Clipper of 6 May 1876 (see van Winsen, p.90); the 24 June 1876 issue of the Illustrated London News amends this to +7-0 and says that these games were played 'pending the tournament' at the Café International, so dates are not clear, but location is probably New York, since the tournament was held there. Feenstra Kuiper and Di Felice may have misattributed the 7-0 score against Alberoni in 1876 to Mason. |
