| The Illustrated London News of 29 Apr. 1876 gives +6-1 for Bird in offhand games; Bird himself in the 6 May 1876 issue of the New York Clipper (see van Winsen, p.90) gives +11-2; the 24 June 1876 issue of the Illustrated London News amends this to +12-2 for Bird and says that these games were played 'pending the tournament' at the Café International, so dates are not clear, but location is probably New York, since the tournament was held there. |
