Notes:
According to John Paul Phillips, this is the son of James McConnell, 1829-1914. Presumably distinct from 'John S. McConnell' (see Hilbert's biography of Shipley, p.282, and the American Chess Magazine of Dec. 1897, p.429, which has 'John S. McConnell' as president of the Roxborough Chess Club in Philadelphia). The Daily Picayune of 16 Dec. 1923 has 'James J. McConnell'.
