Notes: |
A player named 'Knott' appears in the Illustrated London News of 22 Sept. 1849, the Chess Player's Chronicle of Oct. 1849 (p.290) and La Régence of Nov. 1849 (p.343), playing in consultation with Tilghman against Harrwitz (who played blindfold). This is probably Hubert Knott, who later appeared in America, since Tilghman was visiting Britain from the States. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper of 4 Oct. 1856 has 'Nott'. Alan McGowan at the Chessgames.com page for Hubert Knott gives convincing evidence that he is James Brown Knott of Glasgow, who used the name Hubert while in the United States in the 1850s. McGowan has also sent me Glasgow census records giving his birth as 'about 1825' or sometimes 'about 1826', a marriage record of 'Hubert J.B. Knott' in New York in 1854, a record from the 1855 New York census of a 'Hubert Nott' from Scotland, and a death record of James Browne Knotte in 1890 in Edinburgh. There are also chess problems in American publications, such as one in Frank Leslie's New York Journal of 1 Oct. 1855 by 'Mr. Knott, of the Glasgow Chess Club', and another in the New York Clipper of 5 Jul. 1856, by J.B. Knott of the Glasgow Chess Club. |
