Cornil has 'Martin Winawer' on pp.137,139, from La Stratégie (15 Feb. 1874) and from Le Monde Illustré (7 Mar. 1874). Lissowski has 'Marcin Winawer'. Geni.com shows that Szymon Winawer had a son named Marcin, but he died in 1898 at the age of 26, and so was only about 12 years old at the time of the Warsaw 1884 tournament. The 'Marcin Winawer' at Warsaw 1884 was, according to Lissowski and Wolsza, a nephew of Szymon Winawer. Thomas Lemanczyk has pointed out to me that Szymon Winawer's older brother Dawid Winawer, also a chess player, had a son named Mordko or Mieczyslaw, who might be the 'M. Winawer' at Warsaw 1884 if these names were translated to 'Marcin'. In fact, two other brothers of Szymon, Berek and Lajzer, had sons with names beginning with 'M' who might also be candidates. |
