| Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give the name of the player at Dublin 1865 as 'Cordner, Edward James'. The Irish Chess Union website gives 'E. Cordner'. Staunton, in the Illustrated London News of 7 Oct. 1865 (p.347) gives 'Rev. I.C. Cordner' at this event, but in the 28 Oct. 1865 issue he gives a game from the event attributed to 'E. Cordner', so presumably the 'I.C.' was an error. Sergeant has 'Rev. J.C. Cordner' at Dublin 1865, as does the Era of 1 Oct. 1865 (p.6). Edward James Cordner was a Reverend, which also suggests that 'Rev. I.C. Cordner' was really 'Rev. E.J. Cordner'. Staunton also has an 'E.I. Cordner' (28 Dec. 1867, p.722) or 'E.J. Cordner' (28 Jan. 1871, p.91) in later issues of the Illustrated London News. In the Chess World (Dec. 1865, p.304), Staunton has 'Rev. I. Cordner'. |
