Notes: |
Single-round all-play-all, but draws were not to count and to be replayed. According to the Irish Chess Union website, Steinitz and Macdonnell drew their first game and then Steinitz won the second. Gaige doesn't mention the draw. La Grande Storia degli Scacchi doesn't include the win. Di Felice has both and the totals given by Feenstra Kuiper are consistent. Staunton states that the first game between Steinitz and MacDonnell was a draw in the Illustrated London News of 14 Oct. 1865 (p.371) and that the second was won by Steinitz in the 21 Oct. 1865 issue (p.395). There were two other tournaments at the Dublin Congress, players listed in the 7 Oct. 1865 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.347), and the fact that the 2nd tournament was won by MacDonnell with G.F. Barry second is stated in the 11 Nov. 1865 issue (p.475). Not enough information is given for these other tournaments to rate them. |
