Name given as 'Mackey' or 'J. Mackey' in the 1851 Chess Player's Chronicle and Illustrated London News, but as 'J. Mackay' in the 1852 Chess Player's Chronicle. I am guessing that the 'J. Mackey' who played in a tournament in Vienna in 1851 was the player who had subscribed 10 pounds to the London tournament fund, named as 'H. Mackay' on p.94 of the 1851 Chess Player's Chronicle, but 'Mackey, J.H.' on p.283. I am also guessing that this was the Mackey, of Manchester, who visited Rome in 1852 and played Dubois. Additional circumstantial evidence comes from the presence of 'J. Mackay' in Venice in 1852, as shown by a game against Forlico in the 1852 Chess Player's Chronicle (p.136). |
