Notes: |
Staunton gives his name as 'Vencut Ayar' in the Illustrated London News (23 Sept. 1848, p.186) but says in the 9 Sept. 1848 issue (p.147) that the name was difficult to decipher in the letter he received containing the information. However, he had already published in the July 1847 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle, a letter from 'J.I.M' (who is almost certainly James Innes Minchin) with the name of the player written as 'Vencut Agar'. I take this latter version to be correct. |
