Biographical data
Name: Hollis, William Griffiths
Also known as: Major Hollis; Colonel Hollis
Born: 27 Dec. 1827
Died: 10 Feb. 1903

Notes:
He is called 'Major Hollis' in the 29 Mar. 1882 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle (p.153), but 'Col Hollis' in the 16 Dec. 1885 issue (p.266) and 'Hollis Lieut.-Col.' in the 18 Oct. 1890 issue (but 'Colonel Hollis' again later in the same issue). This is consistent with records of William Griffiths Hollis of Northampton, who was promoted to Major 8 Feb. 1882 and to Lieutenant-Colonel 14 Nov. 1885. Is the the 'W.G. Hollis' mentioned in the Chess Player's Chronicle, Bell's Life in London and the Era in the 1850s?
