Event data

Place: London, England
Start date: 24 June 1872
End date: 16 July 1872

Notes:
This was an 8-player all-play-all with draws not counting. La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives 'Puller, Charles Giles' at this event. Di Felice and Harding give 'Puller, Arthur Giles'. The Chess Player's Chronicle of Aug. 1872 (p.121), the Morning Post of 22 July 1872 (p.2) and the Era of 28 July 1872 (p.7) indicate that Wisker, de Vere, Blackburne and Puller had draws (which were not counted in the official score). The report in the Chess Player's Chrnonicle is inconsistent, showing 2 draws for Wisker and one for each of the other 3 (the total should be even, since each drawn game should be attributed to 2 players), but the Morning Post and the Era both show 1 draw for Wisker. The pairings in which the draws occurred can be deduced from the drawn game Wisker-Blackburne given in the 10 Aug. 1872 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.143). Thus, the other drawn game was de Vere-Puller. The results given in the report in the Morning Post of 22 July 1872 are garbled. The same report, uncorrected, is given in the Era of 28 July 1872 (p.7), but a corrected report is given in the 11 Aug. 1872 issue (p.4). Staunton in the Illustrated London News and Di Felice have the play-off game, omitted by La Grande Storia degli Scacchi. Di Felice gives dates 2-14 July, 1872; La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives June/July 1872; the Chess Player's Chronicle of Aug. 1872 (p.120), the Westminster Papers of 1 July 1872 (p.34), the Morning Post of 22 July 1872 (p.2) and the Era of 28 July 1872 (p.7) say that play began 24 June 1872. The Illustrated London News of 20 July 1872, Bell's Life in London of 20 July 1872 (p.5) and the Sunday Times of 21 July 1872 (p.6) say that the play-off game took place on Tuesday, presumably 16 July 1872.
