Event data
Name: Cafe International Tournament
Place: New York
Start date: 21 Mar. 1876
End date: June 1876

Notes:
17 players started but many did not complete all their games and the scores of 3 were struck. Di Felice gives a complete crosstable of all 17 players; van Winsen gives a complete crosstable of all players except those games played between the 3 players whose scores were cancelled: Richardson, Parnell and Hind. Di Felice indicates that the two games between Delmar and Brenzinger were unplayed; van Winsen indicates the score between them as +1-1. Di Felice gives only 31 Aug. 1876 as a date for this event. However, the Illustrated London News of July 15, 1876 says that the tournament began on Mar. 21, 1876. The Westminster Papers of July 1, 1876 says that it was already finished and van Winsen says it ended in June, but the Illustrated London News of July 1, 1876 says that Mason still had to play Becker and Rosen. The Illustrated London News of July 8 says that Mason had won these last 2 games, and that a play-off for 3rd was underway between Mason and Bird, Bird having won the first play-off game. The discrepancy in ending date is likely related to the lead time before publication required to submit these reports. I will suppose that the tournament ended in June. Since there is no other indication of a play-off match between Mason and Bird, I will not count it here.
