Event data
Name: 2nd Counties Chess Association Meeting - Handicap Tournament
Place: Malvern
Start date: 7 Aug. 1871
End date: 12 Aug. 1871

Notes:
The odds classes of the players are not given in the reports in the Malvern Advertiser, but Tim Harding (personal communication) argues that it is likely that the players from the Challenge Cup tournament (Wisker, Newman and Fisher, to which we must add Thorold, presumably) would have been in the first class here, while the players in the 2nd class tournament (only S.G. Kempson) would have played in the second class, while the other players (Curzon, Mrs. Kempson and Miss Fisher) would have been lower, and we can guess that they were all classed as third (though this is a bit dubious). Then we can guess that the odds were standard ones (Pawn and Move for one class difference, Pawn and Two Moves for two class differences). The Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle of Oct. 1871 (vol.2, p.345), however, says that Wisker gave Pawn and Move to Newham and Thorold gave Pawn and Move to Fisher.
