Event table notes

Event data
Name: St. James's Club Handicap Tournament
Place: London, England
Start date: 8 July 1860
End date: 20 Aug. 1860

Notes:
This was a 24-player knockout handicap tournament, but in the first round [A.G.?] Puller, Steward, [James?] Wilson, and Rosenauer all defaulted against Deacon, Hannah, Kolisch and Arndt, respectively, so only 8 of the 12 first-round games were actually played. In the third round Kolisch defaulted to Deacon. That left Deacon, Burden and Wormald as winners of the third round. The 26 Aug. 1860 issue of the Era (p.14) says that 'Deacon, who defeated in succession Messrs Hannah and Wormald, gained the first prize.' However, Hannah was defeated by Wormald in the third round. So I believe this should have said that Deacon defeated Burden and Wormald to take first. One other discrepancy in the reports: The initial description of the odds and class assignments of the players (in the 8 July 1860 issue of the Era, p.14) and the 29 July 1860 issue (p.5) both indicate that Burden must give Barthès odds of Pawn and Two Moves, but the 12 Aug. 1860 issue (p.5) says (in error I presume) that Burden won, giving Barthès Pawn and Move odds. Each round was for the first won game, draws not counting, and the reports only say who won, so I don't know whether any draws occurred.
