Event table notes

Event data
Name: St. James's Club Handicap Tournament
Place: London, England
Start date: Mar. 1861
End date: 8 June 1861

Notes:
Only partial results available. This was a 16-player knockout handicap tournament. Aside from the players listed here, Pieconka, S. Riley, and A. Arndt also participated. Although it clear that two wins were needed to win a pairing, only who beat who is reported in some cases, so in those cases I record the results as 1-0 for the winner. Geake and Wilson won by default in the first round, though against whom is not clear, presumably two of Pieconka, Riley and Arndt. The remaining player of those 3 must have been beaten by Sich. The Era of 9 June 1861 (p.5) says that Saburov 'resigned his game with Mr. Cruikshank,' which may mean that Cruikshank beat him, but, according to the terminology of the time, it may also mean that he gave up the match without playing the last game. I will record it as 2-1 for Cruikshank, though it may have been 1-1 in games actually played.
