| Di Felice gives an incomplete crosstable, with an error in the data given. A complete crosstable can be constructed from reports in the Daily Mail (Brisbane) and the Brisbane Courier, apart from the second Poole-Casperson game which was not played by the time of the final report, and probably never played. The result of the game Ansaldo-Poole, played early in the tournament and adjourned, is not explicitly given in the reports I have seen, but its result can be deduced from the scores to date given in the 6 Nov. 1920 issue of the Daily Mail (p.3), which shows one loss for Ansaldo. Knowing that he lost none of his other games played to that point implies that he lost the game to Poole. This is clear, but the situation is muddied in the final score table given in the 20 Nov. 1920 issue of the Daily Mail (p.4), which shows a loss for Ansaldo, but only 3 wins for Poole, when he must have won 4 if he won against Ansaldo. This table of scores is clearly wrong, since the total of all wins, draws and losses for all players must be even (since all games are counted twice) but here it is odd. So Poole's totals should be +4-2=5 and not +3-2=5 as listed in the table. Di Felice gives the result of the first Ansaldo-Poole game as a win for Ansaldo, but this is incorrect. Otherwise, Di Felice's crosstable is correct in the information given. The missing second round results in his crosstable can be filled in as follows: Robinson-J.A. Boyce 1-0; C.L.R. Boyce-J.A. Boyce 1-0; Ansaldo-Culpin 1-0; Ansaldo-Casperson 1-0. Di Felice gives the end date as Dec. 1920, but the final scores are given in the 20 Nov. 1920 issue of the Daily Mail. |
