Event data |
Name: Manhattan Club Championship |
Place: New York |
Start date: 8 Nov. 1903 |
End date: 3 Jan. 1904 |
|
Notes: |
The New York Sun of 4 Jan. 1904 (p.8) and the New York Times of 4 Jan. 1904 (p.7) give the final scores of 11 players, but in each case out of 11 points, omitting Halpern. The Sun says that the last game was a win by Halpern over Fitch, and the New York Times of 20 Dec. 1903 (p.12) gives scores to date including Halpern with 3.5 out of 9 games, with 2 games to play. In order for the totals to add up to 66, as they should for a 12-player single-round all-play-all tournament, Halpern must have finished with 5.5 points, and so won both of his final two games. The 9 Nov. 1903 issue of the New York Times (p.12) also has A.C. Cass as a participant, but the New York Tribune of 6 Dec. 1903 (p.12) says that Cass had 'retired from the contest and so all the games played by him were annulled'. |
