| There were two preliminary rounds of matches to sort the players into the 4 sections of the main tournament. The 16 winners in the first preliminary round were paired off for a second round, as were the 16 losers in the first round. Where draws occurred, which player was seeded higher was decided by a toss. The 8 who were winners in both rounds formed Section A of the main tournament; the 8 losers in the 2nd round among 1st round winners formed Section B; the 8 winners of the 2nd round among first round losers formed Section C; and the losers of both rounds formed Section D. Di Felice does not give the result of the game Jefferson-Palmi in the 16 losers section of the 2nd preliminary round, but it is given at chessgames.com. |
