Notes:
Scores reported 4 Mar. 1897 are the last I've found, but it is not clear in many cases who played who with what result and which games were left unplayed. The crosstable recorded here is compiled from game results actually reported explicitly, so it is incomplete, but I will use it for rating. Scores at 4 Mar. 1897 (if reliable) include more games: Feibel 11-0; Raubitschek 9-2; Leipziger 5.5-2.5; Honegger 8-3; Pelz 5-6; Davis 5-6; Lipschutz 5-6; Kahn 5.5-6.5; Drescher 4.5-7.5; Metzger 4.5-7.5; Goetze 4-8; Kempa-Pieczonka 1-8; Hirsch 3-7 [but probably should be 3-8]. Hirsch, for one, will be under-rated, because his score shows that he won a couple of games that I have not included. There are many inconsistencies in running totals given as the tournament progressed, as compared to game results reported, but clearly not all game results were reported in reports found. The handicap classes of the 12 players who originally signed up are given (New York Evening Post 16 Nov. 1896), but not that of Pelz, who joined after the first round was played. I am guessing that the handicaps given for class differences of 1, 2, and 3 were Pawn and Move, Pawn and Two Moves, and Knight, respectively. These would be typical, and we are explicitly told (New York Evening Post 21 Dec. 1896) that Davis (4th class) received Knight odds from Raubitschek (1st class). I am guessing that Pelz was in class II, but that could be wrong.
