Only partial results available. This all-play-all tournament involved matches of two or three games between each pair of participants, but we are only given the scores in terms of number of matches won for the top 5 players. Since scores (in match points) are out of 11, it seems that 12 players finished the tournament. Presumably, a third game in a match was played if the score after two games was even, so a drawn match (0.5-0.5 in match points) probably indicated an actual game score of 1.5-1.5. But then a won match could have been 2-0, 1.5-0.5, or 2-1. Representing these as 1-0 in match points will cause a bit of error in rating (probably exaggerating rating differences a bit), but the match scores still give some idea of relative strength, so I use them. In his biography of Mason (p.291), van Winsen says that Doyle won the play-off with Strasser. In volume VII of Mackenzie, Mason and Co. (p.19), he says that Strasser won. I am guessing that the latter was a correction of the former. How many games were involved in this play-off is not stated, so I assume a single game. The only other player known is Töttler. |
