Event data
Name: Simpson's Divan Handicap Tournament
Place: London, England
Start date: 1889
End date: 10 Oct. 1889

Notes:
The report on this handicap tournament in the 12 Oct. 1889 issue of The Field gives the score up to 10 Oct. 1889, but the tournament was not quite finished. I include it anyway, since it was almost complete (99 of 120 games had been played). The as-yet unplayed games were Alderson against Ingoldsby, Ward-Higgs, and Wilkinson, Bird against Lee, Gossip against Sellon, Greatorex against Hetley, Ingoldsby, and Lee, Grossbach against Purchase, Sellon, Ward-Higgs, and Wilkinson, Hetley against Ingoldsby, Sellon, Ward-Higgs, and Wilkinson, Ingoldsby against Purchase, Purchase against Sellon and Ward-Higgs, Sellon against Ward-Higgs, and Ward-Higgs against Wilkinson. The crosstable in the Field has two inconsistencies. Ward-Higgs is shown with a loss to Bird and an unplayed game against Alderson, but Alderson is shown with a win against Ward-Higgs, and Bird is shown with an unplayed game against Ward-Higgs. In order for the totals at right to be correct, the win must have been by Bird, not Alderson. Also Gossip-Müller is shown as a win for both players, but for the scores at right to be correct, this must have been a win by Müller.
