Notes: |
Scores in several 3rd and 4th round matches are not given by Reichhelm, though in each case the winner must have won 3 games. In each of these cases, rather than omit the result, I have assumed the score to be 3-1, as a compromise between the extremes. The error I make here can only be 1 game and possibly a draw or two. This applies to the matches: Montgomery-Wells, Overman-Macadam, Stern-Lewis and Overman-Stern. The New York Clipper of 17 Mar. 1860 says the first round is underway. I will guess that it started on Mar. 1860 therefore. Reichhelm says that the game Walker-Walden in round 2 was defaulted, but the New York Clipper of 12 May 1860 says that Walker won of Walden, giving odds of Pawn and Two Moves. I include it as a 1-0 result, since I don't know the actual score. Reichhelm also says that Overman-Young was defaulted in round 2, so I don't include that match, and says 'Simon Stern vs. Dwight 1 resigned', which I take to mean that Dwight won one game and then resigned the match to Stern in round 2. |
