| Bird, in the New York Clipper of 6 May 1876 (see van Winsen, p.90) said he 'won a majority of about 10 games' against Martinez. Reichhelm gives +24-21=2 for Bird, as did the Philadelphia Intelligencer of 15 Feb. 1876 (see van Winsen, p.91). The Sunday Republic of 13 Feb. 1876 gave +24-21=0 for Bird (see van Winsen, p.91), as did the Dubuque Chess Journal of Mar. 1876 (p.139). Played during Bird's visit to Philadelphia in February 1876, according to van Winsen. |
