Whyld gives the name of the player in the first class section of the Manchester 1860-1861 club tournament as 'J. Wood'. This is presumably not a misprint for 'Matthew Bateson Wood', also a member of the Manchester club at this time, and is clearly distinct from the 'J.G. Wood' who was in the third class section of the same event. There were several other players named 'Wood' in nearby clubs, including a 'Wood' from Liverpool in the 1840s, a J.M. Wood from Liverpool in the early 1870s and a John Wood in Worcester from the 1850s to the 1870s. Presumably all these are distinct.
