The Illustrated London News of 4 Sept. 1858 (p.229) gives 'F.S. Hill' as the name of a player who played for Birmingham in its match against Worcester at the Birmingham chess meeting of Aug. 1858, and the Sunday Times of 4 Jul. 1858 (supplement, p.2) gives 'F.S. Hill' on the local committee of the meeting. However, the 3 Jul. 1858 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.14), the 18 Apr. 1858 issue of the Era (p.7) and the 25 Apr. 1858 issue of the Sunday Times (supplement, p.4) give 'H.S. Hill' on the local committee of the meeting. These were clearly distinct players, however, as both appear simultaneously in a number of events. The Chess Player's Chronicle of Apr. 1859 (p.101) has a 'T.S. Hill' of Birmingham, which I assume to be an error for 'F.S. Hill'.
