| Notes: |
| The Chess Player's Chronicle of Dec. 1852 has 'Hamell'; the issue of Oct. 1853 has 'Hamill'. I suspect the 'Hamel' who played in several Manchester events in the 1850s and 1860s was 'L. Hamel' of Glasgow. The connection is suggested by a mention in the 7 Feb. 1857 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.124) of a 'Hamel (of Glasgow)' at the annual soirée of the Manchester Club. The Glasgow Herald of 26 Jan. 1852 shows that L. Hamel was involved in a Glasgow calico printing business, along with John Crum, which had trade with Manchester. Tim Harding (personal communication) has provided a birth year for F.J. Hamel of 1862, and evidence that F.J. Hamel was the son of Ludwig Hamel. Ludwig died in 1870 it was another Hamel who played for Manchester in 1871, possibly Sigismund. Alan McGowan has sent me copes of official records showing that Ludwig Hamel arrived in Hull from Hamburg on 15 Aug. 1836, married Clotilde Heilbroun in Chorlton, Lancashire (now an outlying suburb of Manchester), in the third quarter of 1862, and dies 10 Dec. 1870. He also sent records from ancestry.com showing that 'L. Hamel' lived in Nottingham in 1862 and that 'Ludwig Hamel' ran a calico printing business (Boyd, Son & Hamel) with an office in Chorlton in 1863. The Dundee Advertiser of 22 Mar. 1895 lists Ludovic Hamel as one of the founders of the Dundee Club in 1847. |
