Notes: |
10-player, single-round all-play-all tournament. Both Gaige and Di Felice indicate that Hill's games with Charleton and Nicholson were not played, as does the Chess Player's Quarterly Chronicle. Staunton in the Illustrated London News gives number of wins, draws and losses for each player, consistent with the crosstables of Gaige, Di Felice and the Chess Player's Quarterly Chronicle. Staunton gives 'Newham (of Barrow)', i.e., William Leighton Newham. The Chess Player's Quarterly Chronicle gives 'Newham' as a column heading on the crosstable and 'W.L. Newman' as a row heading, but gives his name correctly as 'W.L. Newham' elsewhere in the report, and the error is noted in a later issue (Dec. 1870, p.187). |
