Notes: |
This was a 16-player, handicap knockout tournament. Di Felice has Tennant in Class IV, but the Chess Player's Chronicle of Aug. 1872 (p.121) and the Westminster Papers of 1 July 1872 (p.35) have him in Class III. The Westminster Papers of 1 July 1872 (p.35) include among the early results in this event 'Blackburne beat Major Minchin, giving pawn and move', which is an error. Blackburne was not in this event. Aside from the final between Thorold and Wisker, the scores of each pairing are not given by my sources, only who won against who and at what odds. I will take the scores all to be 1-0, as a conservative estimate, with the excpetion of the Zukertort-Steinitz pairing, where Sergeant says that Zukertort won after 2 draws, and the Thorold-Wisker final, which Di Felice gives as +2-0=0 for Thorold. The Illustrated London News of 17 Aug. 1872 (p.168), the Westminster Papers of 1 Sept. 1872 (p.65) and the Chess Player's Chronicle of Oct. 1872 (p.160) state that Thorold won the event, and therefore beat Wisker in the final. Interstingly, Sergeant (p.158) and Forster (p.82) say that Wisker won. The Illustrated London News of 17 Aug. 1872 (p.168) also says that several other games still had to be played. I guess, therefore, that it finished later in Aug. 1872. Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give the results of the knockout for first and second prizes, but the Chess Player's Chronicle also gives the results amongst the losers of the first round for third and fourth prizes. |
