Notes: |
Di Felice has 'R.C. Pierpoint' at this event but the Chess Player's Chronicle of 6 Aug. 1884 (p.61) has Rev. E.P. Pierpoint. The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post of 4 Aug. 1884 (p.8) indicates that Pollock and Fedden shared first and second prizes, with Loman third. Neither Gaige nor Di Felice mention any play-off matches, but the Morning Post of 6 Aug. 1884 (p.6) says that the three-way tie was played off, but it led to another tie, 'each player winning one game' and that the prizes were then divided between them. This division of the prizes is reiterated in the Bistol Mercury and Daily Post of 26 Feb. 1885 (p.6). Rowland (p.21) gives the result of a play-off game Pollock-Loman, won by Pollock, so I assume also wins by Loman against Fedden and Fedden against Pollock. Gaige and Di Felice give the end date as 1 Aug. 1884. The Morning Post of 6 Aug. 1884 (p.6) says that the event was finished the previous Saturday, which was 2 Aug. 1884, possibly the day on which the play-off games were conducted. |
