The score is reported in the Chess Monthly when a few games remained to be played. Gilchrist's score is clearly incorrect (it reads 11 won, 6.5 lost, 1 yet to play, which does not add up to 20 games). In order for the totals to add up correctly, Gilchrist's score should be either 11 won, 9 lost, and 0 yet to play; or 10 won, 8 lost, and 2 yet to play; or 9 won, 7 lost, and 4 yet to play). I will assume the first of these as the most likely, since at least the number of wins would then have been reported correctly. Assuming that the two games between a pair of players were played immediately in succession (which is suggested by the fact that although Court had 4 left to play, and Crum 1, the report in the Glasgow Herald of 22 Nov. 1880 makes it clear that Court, Crum, Jenkin, and Mills had played all their games amongst themselves), we can deduce from the scores that Court had yet to play two games against Bryden, and one each against Wilson and Crum. I record these results without the yet-unplayed games, with the assumptions about who had yet to play whom listed here. |
