Notes:

I am guessing that the 'Barwick' listed in the Westminster Papers of 1 Dec. 1875 (p.139) is actually 'Alex. Berwick'. Alan McGowan has sent me copies of census records, with date of birth given as 'abt 1822' in the 1841 census, 'abt 1823' in the 1881 census, and 'abt 1822' again in the 1891 census. McGowan also sent a death notice for an Alexander Berwick with date of death 25-05-1905, whose age was 83 and who therefore might be the chess player.
