| According to the Illustrated London News of 4 Apr. 1874 (p.331) Nicholson won +3-1 against Tracey, but the official score was +2-1 as only 3 games counted. The Huddersfield College Magazine of May 1874 (p.156) and the Field of 4 Apr. 1874 have +3-0 for Nicholson, which includes an unfinished game that was adjudicated in Nicholson's favour by Steinitz. I will assume that the extra game was played, though not counted and that +3-1 was the result, though it may have been Tracey's win that was the extra game. The Illustrated London News of 4 Apr. 1874 (p.331), the Field of 4 Apr. 1874, and the Huddersfield College Magazine of May 1874 (p.156) show the result of the Meredith-Ogden match as +1-2 for Meredith; the Chess Player's Chronicle of Apr. 1874 (p.57) gives +0-2 for Meredith. Sergeant follows the Chess Player's Chronicle. I don't know which is correct but will follow Steinitz in the Field, since it was he who adjudicated unfinished games. |
