Notes:

Apparently not the James A. Birch who played in Manchester at least from 1853 to 1863. This James Birch of Glasgow was born in Manchester, but in 1841, so too young to have been active in Manchester chess in 1853. Also not to be confused with James Birch Jr. (1872-1943), also of Glasgow.
