Notes:

Not Rev. Alexander George Gordon Ross, born 1866. Also, probably not the 'Ross' who played in the Aberdeen tournament of 1859 (see Illustrated London News, 2 Apr. 1859, p.342). Alan McGowan has sent a probate record with date of death, and from an address in a membership list of the Glasgow Chess Club, traced marriage, death and census records. These are inconsistent with regard to age (and therefore date of birth) but McGowan has found a birth record that seems likely to be the right person, so I will use that birth date.
