The San Francisco Chronicle of 24 Mar. 1902 (p.10) has 'A.D. Howe'. Walter Chan has identified the 'A. Howe' in the New Zealand Championship of 1898 in Auckland as A.S. Howe of San Francisco. The New Zealand Herald of 24 Apr. 1897 (supplement, p.4) mentions a 'Mr. Howe, of San Francisco' in Auckland, and the 12 Mar. 1898 issue (supplement, p.4) gives a game from the New Zealand Championship by 'A.S.
