Name: Gocher, John |

Notes: |
John Gocher is given as the contact person (and therefore Secretary) for the Ipswich and Suffolk Chess club in the 16 Jan. 1858 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.67). In the 20 Oct. 1860 issue (p.380), the Secretary of the Ipswich Club is given as Thomas Gocher ('we believe'). This might be an error for John Gocher, but the latter had a brother and a father both named Thomas, as well as a brother named Charles (from census information via Tim Harding). The Chess Player's Chronicle of Oct. 1859 (p.301) says the president of the Ipswich Club was 'Grochey', probably a corruption of Gocher. |
