Notes:
The player listed as playing at Harrogate in 1888 seems to be 'C.C. Heywood' (although the copy of the newspaper article at the web site is rather poor quality). According to Gaige (Chess Personalia), G.C. Heywood was born in London but died in Newcastle. However, Tim Harding has sent me census information (particularly the 1871 census) that he was born in Winkleigh, Devon, not in London and that his middle name was 'Carm'. He later moved to Newcastle. This seems to be an error (handwritten 'rm' and 'nn' can be difficult to distinguish), though, as Steve Mann has found not only numerous occurrences of 'Cann' as his middle name, but also mention in his obituary of his uncle, Mark Cann.
