| Not to be confused with 'W.H. Scott', of the Halifax (Yorkshire) Chess Club. The fact that they are distinct is indicated by the presence of both in a list of players at the West Yorkshire Chess Association Meeting of 22 May 1858 appearing in the Illustrated London News of 5 June 1858 (p.567). Could this be the same 'Dr. Scott', however, as the one who captained the Tynemouth team in the Newcastle - Tynemouth Club match in Mar. 1866 (see Illustrated London News, 10 Mar. 1866, p.243)? Also, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper of 24 Jul. 1858 has a game played by a John Watkinson in Montreal, against W. Scott 'of the Huddersfield Chess Club'. Of course, John Watkinson was also of Huddersfield. Could the two of them have been visiting Montreal together? |
