| I am guessing that the 'Arthur Pearse' who played for the St. George's Club in London in 1898, according to Forster, was the 'Major-General Pearse' who played for the St. George's Club as early as 1885 (Morning Post, 26 Mar. 1885, p.3), or 'General Pearse' in 1885 (British Chess Magazine of Apr. 1886, p.158). Further evidence that General Pearse had first initial 'A' is given in the Chess Player's Chronicle of 8 Nov. 1882 (p.532), where a list of committee members for the organization of the London Tournament of 1883 includes 'Colonel A Pearse, R.A.'. |
