The Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle of Aug. 1871 has 'James Sanders, Clifton' on the committee for the Counties' Chess Association meeting at Malvern 1871. The Dec. 1870 issue (p.188) of the Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle, the 12 Nov. 1870 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.507), and the 19 Aug. 1871 issue of the Illustrated London News (p.163) have 'Saunders'. Burt's history of the Bristol Club (p.10) and the Chess Player's Magazine of Oct. 1864 (p.290) have 'Sanders'. There was also a Thomas Cooke Sanders of Oxford active at around the same time. The Western Daily Press of 13 Apr. 1888 (p.7) mentions a 'J.J. Saunders', who might possibly be the same person, or perhaps a son. A 'J. Sanders' of Birmingham is listed as a subscriber in the Report of the Manchester Meeting of 1857 (p.39). Is this the same person? |
