| Di Felice has 'Newham, William Leighton' at this event; La Grande Storia degli Scacchi has 'Newham, GH'. Staunton in the Illustrated London News has 'G.H. Newham' in the tournament though he also indicates that 'W.L. Newham' was at the Meeting. The Malvern Advertiser, the Westminster Papers and the Chess Player's Quarterly Chronicle have W.L. Newham in the tournament. So it seems pretty clear that it was W.L. Newham and that Staunton's mention of 'G.H. Newham' was just an error, perhaps picked up by La Grande Storia degle Scacchi. Gaige has 'Feddon'; Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi have 'Fedden, Nelson'; Staunton has 'Fedden'; the Westminster Papers has 'N. Fedden'; and the Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle has 'N. Feddon', though elsewhere this journal gives his full name as 'Nelson Fedden' (pp.277, Aug. cover). The crosstable in the Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle of Oct. 1871 (vol.2, p.344) shows the game Fisher-Coker as a draw but Coker-Fisher as a loss for Coker, and thus gives Coker's total as 3 instead of 3.5. The Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle report also says that Fedden 'had one or two games scored against' him by default, but there is no indication of which game or games these were. |
